Sep 2018 - Transatlantic Viking Route to New York - Day 10

Welcome to Portland, Maine, USA

This morning the ship raised the stars and stripes as we enter the USA - which of course means we are joined by the Border Patrol for a passport and ESTA check

The weather today is fantastic - warm blue skies, perfect for slowly approaching the city and staring with envy at the beautiful New England beach homes.

Portland Head Lighthouse

Note to self - Shore Road is where I need to buy that summer property for retirement

J's favourite in every harbour - the humble tugs

Portland Silver/Fore square - the city has a lovely New England charm to it - no huge skyscrapers

and some fantastic historic  properties well worth the short walk from the port

This is Victoria Mansion. Also known as the Morse-Libby House, Victoria Mansion was built between 1858 and 1860 as a summer home for Ruggles Sylvester Morse and his wife Olive.

Fortunately early October feels more like a warm English summer day.
